The One-Hit Wonders (1955-1958)

One-Hit Wonders Continued ( 1959 thru 1962 )

Over the years there have been many “One-Hit Wonders”. These are a few of the entries that fit into that category.According to Billboard, one of the early contributors was ‘The Penguins’ with “Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)”. It peaked at #8 on the charts, February 1955, and still is very popular on most “Oldies” radio programs. The ‘Baby Boomers’ are sure to remember “The Ballad Of Davy Crockett”. It peaked at #29 in April 1955. Also in 1955 “At My Front Door (Crazy Little Mama)” by the ‘El Dorados’,

peaking at #17 in November. In 1956, the number of ‘One-Hit Wonders’ grew substantially. A few memorable tunes were: “Eddie My Love” by ‘The Teen Queens’; “Blue Suede Shoes” by ‘Carl Perkins’; “Stranded In The Jungle” by three different groups: ‘The Cadets’, ‘The Jayhawks’ and ‘The Gadabouts’ and”Since I Met You Baby” by ‘Ivory Joe Hunter’. As the years passed by, the number of artists in this category increased rapidly with Rock ‘N’ Roll’s popularity.1957 brought a fresh crop. ‘Mickey and Sylvia’ had a hit with “Love Is Strange”, peaking in March. ‘Johnnie and Joe’ sang “Over The Mountain, Across The Sea”, hitting #8 in July. “Mr. Lee” by ‘The Bobbettes’ made it to #6 in September. And ‘Thurston Harris’ gave us “Little Bitty Pretty One” in November. In 1958, the list grew again. Many one-timers graced us with some tunes that keep recurring today. If you listen closely to the commercials on TV, you can recognize the link to some of these songs. Here are a few: “Get A Job” by ‘The Silhouettes’; “Don’t You Just Know It” by ‘Huey Piano Smith And The Clowns’; “Book Of Love” by ‘The Monotones’; “Purple People Eater” by ‘Sheb Wooley’; “One Summer Night” by ‘The Danleers’; “Born Too Late” by ‘The Poni-Tails’; “Summertime, Summertime” by ‘The Jamies’; “Rockin’ Robin” by ‘Bobby Day’; “To Know Him Is To Love Him” by ‘The Teddy Bears’. There were many more “One-Hit Wonders” in the years listed. I picked some of the songs that eclipsed the passing of time.
